Same Woody Valley harness in both but flying so flawlessly in the latter it's hard to believe it's the same individual.
Safety of the Forbes towing operation arbitrarily increased:
- at every bit of twelve hundred feet
- with threat potential to the planes nonexistent
- over the intentions of the drivers on both ends of the string to continue
Costs:
- wasted:
-- World comp day for this guy who's just come halfway around the planet for this event and experience
-- efforts of:
--- tug and glider pilots
--- three ground crewman
--- launch cart recovery vehicle and driver
-- tug:
--- driver
--- launch and climb
--- gas
--- engine and airframe wear and tear
-- primo soaring time of everyone behind in line and supporting same
- glider recovery:
-- vehicle
-- two person crew
- And we'll count the downtube as well. Initially I was disinclined to 'cause the landing wasn't related to the (failed) tow and could've happened exactly the same after the conclusion of a 150 mile triangle. But he wasn't getting any better at staying in position in the course of this tow so it's not a good bet that the finish of the flight had anything of value in the education department.

Sander's gonna stay locked in this stiff-arm mode until well after he mushes up well clear of the cart.
Proper procedure is to pull in a bit as soon as the cart starts rolling - or, with this much headwind, well before and HOLD IT. And REALLY hold it if you're an idiot pro toad. The glider will quickly trim, the keel will lift out of the support, you let the speed build, nudge the nose up a wee bit and rise up out of the control bar cradles, then if everything's fine (which it always is) you allow the hold-downs to slip through your grips, lose the cart, stay low waiting for the tug to get airborne and rotate.
Sander's keel NEVER lifts clear. The glider rolls to starboard, all the weight is on the starboard wheel, the port wheel starts castering violently. Sander stays nose high and levers the glider up off the keel support to put that phase of the tow behind him.

The exciting bits
026-03722Jim Rooney - 2012/05/28 11:49:58 UTC
Think about it... you're going a million miles an hour under huge (relatively speaking) line tension as you come blazing out of the cart struggling to "stay down"... as you slam into turbulent air. Hell yes you're going to break weaklinks. That's what they're there for!
You're subjecting them to massive loadings.
(The shock loading a weaklink sees as you hit the propwash is far greater than people appreciate)
That's why we have them... they're doing their job.

Either the tug driver is totally clueless or he's being lifted by a thermal. I'm going with the latter. One doesn't need an IQ very high up in the double digit range to know how to fly a tow. And I strongly suspect this guy has tons of these under his belt.

Remember, a weak link improves safety.
Say it over and over and over in your head until it sinks in.
And take that straw man argument and burn it please.

Our best look at the carabiner. Gate aft. Don't worry about it. You'll never be needing your parachute anyway - as long a you keep sticking with HGFA SOPs anyway.
