I saw this guy running around the boat launch at McClure.

Many years ago, I happened upon one at the bottom of the upper lz. From that point, it is uphill and downwind, so I figured I could run him down. We set out roadrunner and coyote style. I started to reel him in and was within a yard or so and gaining. The end of the lz was approaching and I was about to catch him. As he crested the hill, he put out his wings shooting into the air, way faster than I could run. As he jetted down the trail, I am sure he was laughing at me.

Nice picture, cool bird. I just heard a radio segment on them a week or two ago and was surprised to find that their range was a lot more extensive than I had thought. Then I looked at the map after your post and was stunned to see that they're up in California almost to the Oregon line.

Would love to see one. Will probably have a shot in another couple months.

Happy to see you still alive and posting here again.

Other wildlife news...

My sister's across-the-street wildlife biologist neighbor got a nice look at a Wolf several hundred yards behind her (my sister's) backyard (Northern Idaho) a couple weeks ago. (The Elk hunters in Idaho really despise Wolves because Wolves are known to hunt Elk - I can certainly see their point and sympathize.)

The Port Authority is putting a screeching halt on killing the snowy owl at New York airports, bowing to pressure from animal lovers who are angered that the birds were being blasted with shotguns.

A day after the Daily News revealed in a front page story that the PA had put the adorable white owl on its kill list, the agency announced a change of heart.

"The Port Authority is working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to move immediately toward implementing a program to trap and relocate snowy owls that pose a threat to aircraft at [John F. Kennedy] and LaGuardia airports," the agency said in a statement Monday night.

"The Port Authority's goal is to strike a balance in humanely controlling bird populations at and around the agency's airports to safeguard passengers on thousands of aircrafts each day."

A source familiar with the agency's policy told The News that the authority's "wildlife specialists" started exterminating the owls Saturday, gunning down three at Kennedy Airport that day alone.

The agency said that over the past two weeks, five planes at JFK, Newark and LaGuardia airports were struck by snowy owls.
Yeah. The planes were struck by the owls. Right.

Funny nobody's reporting damage to the planes. I'm guessing the owls came out second best after stupidly attacking things that far out of their league.

Hey Dell. Career opportunity here.

Paraglider and Russian Eagle

OK - This is a GREAT video. LMFAO

Pilot has a bird strike with a pair of eagles, one of which gets tangled in his risers. Has to throw reserve. He talks all the way through it - but the subtitling is in English.

A must watch...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGzzSIZvA40
- Yeah, we've all watched it already.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N65ALqiBW_o

Better resolution on that one.

- A *RUSSIAN* *EAGLE*. Right.
-- What part of "India, Bir" do you not understand?
-- Yes. An EAGLE.
John Stokes - 2014/04/10 01:49:39 UTC

Hey,
That's been posted before. The bird is a Griffon Vulture, not an eagle.
Just astounding that anybody who's been talking for more than eighteen months - let alone people who fly hike-inable soaring aircraft and use soaring birds as thermal markers - need to be told this.

He's biting neither you, your fucking glider, nor your fucking lines.
*I need to untangle him first
eh, what you think?...*
Nah, just keep battling him. If you keep on doing the same thing over and over you're bound to get better results eventually.
~...probably , fuck, try not to kill him...~
Fuck off. He's battling him. The whole purpose of battling is to kill the other guy.
*...fuck, I honestly don't want to kill him, I feel bad for him, fuck...*'
...I'm gonna try to get him out here, but he might injure me, he's got a big beak...biting fingers*
Try taking a female Peregrine out of a net sometime.
*...Fucked...*'
~Everything is ok with Voffka and his accident with that turkey, a massive turkey - he went...~
~...Its stuck in his lines
hehehe...~
^Take some shots if you can, we are on the landing - let us know if you need anything, we are here...^
~Ok~
Tug on the lines a few times. See what happens.
...Where you going...hey...where you going with my paraglider!? Wait bitch...WAIT!
He's running away with my glider down the slope!*
Yeah, how 'bout that? And you're just there to battle him. Can't imagine why he'd be upset with you jerking repeatedly on the lines hopelessly and horribly entangling his wing.
*Guys I don't , fuck, know what to do, I might have to kill him fuck... fuck*
Yeah, the level of abuse to which you were subjecting him wasn't the least bit effective. Time to start thinking about ramping things up. And if you do then make sure you get it on video and post it. Then see what kind of response you get from soaring pilots, the general public, the Indian government.
*There ,fuck, these fags don't give a fuck/look where they are flying...*
Well if he's a fag then you'd be doing him a favor by killing him. (Ever consider establishing an International Hawks Hang Gliding Association, Bob? Lotsa good freedom loving people in some of these other countries ya know.)
*...Listen if it wasn't for the reserve I'd a been fucked...*
And that would probably have made YOU a fag.
*I'm here in the woods far and deep and he's still, fuck, pulling down the hill.
Go figure. You're battling him and he's trying to go in the opposite direction. What the fuck is wrong with this fag?
Fucking winged condom.*'
Little birdy, you know you should get out of here...
...yea, here just lets untangle these lines...
Yeah, let's try reversing direction and starting saying and doing something intelligent with this situation.
*unrelated radio chat*'
...so what do you have here...

Why? You were doing so much better insulting, battling, and abusing him.
...just going to free up your wing here, damn...

*Ok so everyone attention; The Eagle is whole, The Eagle is Free, The Eagle has left... actually flew away*
Great job. Couldn't have done any better myself. 'Specially with an eagle and those deadly talons to deal with.
*I'm going to start packing, over*
Good luck tomorrow.
Pilot is okay.
One section of the wing was torn, but the next day was repaired.
The eagle flew away and his destiny is unknown.
English Subtitles & English Friendly Version Done by Roger (AdrenalineAddicted)

With written consent from the pilot, a friend of mine who first showed me this awesome footage in Bir the day after it happened.
And that bird looked like an eagle to you as well?
Made for all the english speaking viewers to enjoy more throughly.
Thanks. I actually came away thinking this guy was less of an asshole than what my assessment was before seeing the translation.

Phill Bloom - 2014/06/09 15:05:50 UTC

So here is Buster a perfectly good non flying, mouse killing cat. He has no less than 75 kills, rats, mice, birds, lizards, and 1 stupid squire who thought he could eat busters food.
We are moving and are in a temporary situation, I was hoping to loan him out for a little while until we get housing under control. Anyone interested, anyone, anyone, Bueler, anyone?
Just take him to county animal control. They'll deal with him humanely.

What the fuck makes you think you're any better than - or even anywhere near as good as - Dell?

Timber Rattler at Woodstock
Matt Ingram - 2014/05/28 14:35:34 UTC
Arlington

We found a rattlesnake living under a boulder very close to where PGs normally stand when launching - a little downslope and to the right about ten feet. Timber Rattlers can be deadly...
Compared to hang and para gliders? How many of these sports participants do you know who've gone out for a day of fun and come back dead from snakebite? I can name you a fair handful of flyers who've had their careers seriously interrupted or ended at Woodstock (including my own three times - injured temporarily and permanently and pretty much totaled glider) and none of them have been as a consequence of Timber Rattlers or Copperheads.
...but thankfully warn you when you're getting too close.
Don't count on it, dude. I remember approaching a big Timber Rattler barefoot (shoes still in hand after wading across a small river) at dusk and the only reaction it had was mild curiosity. (Before I caught it anyway. Then it was royally pissed off. (Released it a short time later.))
This is likely it's home and for pilot safety we may need to remove it.
Fuck that. Yes. That's ITS home, that's where it needs to live, you're visitors/trespassers, leave it the fuck alone. If you wanna do something about pilot safety I have all kinds of suggestions for ya. And you can put leaving Timber Rattlers the fuck alone on the list.

If you wanna pretend to do something that's gonna make any difference just...

Baby Rattle Snake on launch

...move it a few yards.
Image
George Huffman - 2014/05/28 15:53:56 UTC

Don't count on a warning. When they shed their eyes get clouded over and they may not give a warning rattle at all...
I'd guess they'd be MORE likely to buzz when they're visually compromised. I've seen that shift in a Cottonmouth I kept for a while.
...before striking or it may come so close on that its not effective.
It's NEVER gonna come TOWARDS you. If anybody's gonna come close to anybody it's gonna be you towards it.
In the rough and tumble life I've led the rattlesnake bite was the most painful experience with no close second!
Yep. If you get bit it's serious and nasty and can do permanent damage. But it's very unlikely to kill you.

So how'd ya get bit? The vast majority of venomous snakebites in the US are on a hand.
Jim Rowan - 2014/05/28 20:55:37 UTC
Cumberland
Hi JR. Fuck you.
Timber rattlesnakes tend to be shy and non-aggressive unless threatened. They will avoid humans and unless they are surprised or cornered, they will leave the immediate vicinity when they sense human activity nearby.
Don't count on it.
Walk with heavy footsteps...
Yeah. People are gonna stomp around at launch because there MIGHT be a rattler in the vicinity. That's what deer and bear do all the time up on that mountain to make sure THEY don't get bit. And make sure that your backup loop is in good shape when you do your final suspension check in the setup area.
...and watch where you put your hands and feet. Timber rattlesnake bites are fairly rare...
So are Timber Rattlers. And there's a reason why.
...and usually the consequence of the person agitating the snake.
Dan Tuckwiller - 2014/05/30 02:59:03 UTC

This time of year there might be baby snakes about too. I don't know about this particular subspecies...
Species.
...but the rattlers that are relatively common in California don't rattle shortly after birth...
They can't. They only have one button.
...but they are every bit as venomous as the adults.
Implying that a bite from a newborn is every bit as dangerous as a bite from a five footer. Bullshit. Same venom, two percent of the dose. If you're a mouse you're in deep shit.
Maybe someone, perhaps a club officer, could get in touch with the USFS and ask if they can arrange to move the snake(s) to a more remote location?
It IS in a more remote location. It's as remote as it could get. Assholes have killed them off everywhere else. Hopefully the USFS can arrange to move YOU a more remote location if you can't manage to set up and launch without stepping on these things.
Larry Bunner - 2014/05/31 15:37:58 UTC

When you talk to USFS, mention taking out a few boulders to remove the snake problem as well.
Yeah Larry, let's not just move the snake from its home, let's wreck its home as well. The only snake problem is that you assholes have totally wiped them out from ninety-five percent of their range and douchebag boulder rollers and Scoutmasters are working on finishing the job. Go fuck yourself.

1989/04/09. Very cold very slow little Rattler near the back of the McConnellsburg ramp, 2171 MSL, catching some early season rays. Everybody grabbed cameras, watched it for a while, and didn't make a goddam big fuckin' deal about it.

What a bunch o' babies.
