If you get off to the side of the tug, the v-bridle dampens how far over your shoulders get pulled, but also pulls over on the glider, so you only have to do half as much correction, the other half is done for you.

Yup, while getting pulled forward through the bar (and resisting the pull with his arms) he could have let go and reached for the release. That would have insured a good outcome

The first five seconds of a cart based aerotow are by far the most dangerous and after that releasing with a barrel release is probably a better idea.
