Cinco de Mayo 2017

In short order Tad's gang was on the attack.
I have seventeen guys - Yours Truly included - who've posted at least once on Kite Strings and haven't been banned. (Should only have sixteen but Steve didn't want me to do Garrett.)

I don't know what you have by way of equivalence but at:

http://www.ushawks.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21
Official US Hawks Membership List

you have a list of 245 legitimate looking IDs. So how come I have an attack gang to immediately take care of you while after close to a week you haven't had a single response to the above referenced rather extensive post?

P.S. I notice you're not getting much in the way of support in your defense of our current president either.

(Maybe it's a quality/quantity thing.)

For all of Tad's crowing at kitestrings, I believe Bob has degrees in linguistics.
An unrepentant child molester makes it up to rank of hang gliding gang leader... How does one NOT crow about that? Gotta be a first for the sport - maybe I can get some kinda FAI award.

Yeah, he'd definitely have NEEDED to have had degrees in linguistics to have spun all the crap he did for the Mission Statement page. Reminds me a lot of:

I also like that this discussion emphasizes that breaking a weak link is something that can be practiced - just like we practice stalls - so we understand how to handle them and to not be afraid of them. I had a terrifying stall experience with my instructor when I was learning to fly airplanes back in the 70s. For a long time I feared getting close to stall. As long as I feared stalls, I was not spending much time getting comfortable with them, and that didn't make me a better pilot. So there's a lot to be said for safely learning to handle the inevitable rather than trying to come up with some way to avoid the inevitable.
Nice job Bill !!!! ImageImageImageImageImage
Once we go up to two thousand feet in smooth air with our tandem aerotow instructor and learn the weak link success reaction skill we realize that stalls are mere inconveniences at worst and the location of the ground relative to our gliders can never be an issue.
Years later I tried to add a Masters in Electrical Engineering, but my Aero & Astro undergraduate degree was just a bit too far from EE, and I dropped out. I was also working full time in my career ... which didn't help.
I can think of other things your Aero & Astro career didn't help with.

The point here is if you are being towed into the air and not expecting that at any second you will be able to handle the loss of tow tension, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING WRONG!

I looked at the video ZC and what is not obvious is the type of bridle he was using.
I'm betting the pilot was not using a bridle to the keel release and that he couldn't hold the climb rate down while the truck was towing the pilot too fast.
What is obvious to me is that the pilot was using a very strong weaklink to be able to climb so fast with the keel more than 30 degrees to the horizon (even taking into consideration the tilted earth towing scenario).
When the pilot lost the towline it had the nose too high and due to that it climbed into a stall. My weaklinks would not allow me to climb that fast and develop into a stall like that.

Brainstorm, stop towline recovery chute entanglement.
Bill Cummings - 2016/06/25 14:20:12 UTC

Depending on the elasticity of a towline, releasing under much tension has proven to be a good way to instantly tie a bow or a knot in the falling towline. For this reason as well as not wanting to release into a climbing hammerhead stall I would always have the tow vehicle reduce (not totally) the line tension before releasing. I reduce tension for releasing while doing ST, (over land or water.) PL (over land or water.)

Close to six years / 1.5 US Presidential terms now. And what do you have to show for it?
Bill Cummings - 2017/05/15 17:10:19 UTC

Don't forget, "Read my lips. No new taxes."
Not one of my favorite Presidents but... Was that a lie? Or did reality start seriously intruding on his intentions and force a responsible action?
Also others have lied after the election, IE "I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
1. In response to an investigation that had spun outta control after finding total fucking zilch of substance.

2. Although his intent obviously WAS one of deception, there WAS an issue about the actual definition of "sexual relations".

3. Who gives a flying fuck? Not a big fan of government getting involved with relations minus components of actual victimization and/or exploitation.

And compare/contrast with this total sociopath a minority of US voters have put into the most powerful position on the planet who can't get through two sentences without telling a minimum of three flagrant and almost always dangerous lies and is chumming up with every authoritarian mass murderer who appears on the radar.

And history's gonna record where people stood as this ball started rolling.

The graph on the previous page shows estimated atmospheric CO2 for millions of years. It's generally believed that the decline in atmospheric CO2 corresponds to the sequestering of carbon in what we call fossil fuels.
1. Who's "we"?
2. They don't become fuels until after we've dug or pumped them up and gotten ready to set fire to them.
The whole point is that putting CO2 into the atmosphere is an elastic and reversible process.
So would putting a bunch of Jews, commies, queers in a sealed chamber for a couple hours. Open the vents back up and the O2/CO2 ratio quickly reverts to normal. No harm, no foul.
The hysteria that we'll end up with a runaway green house situation (and end up like Venus) is not supported by the scientific evidence.
1. What hysteria that we'll end up with a runaway green house situation (and end up like Venus)? Who's talking about it? Sounds exactly like:

gasdive,

One of the stated goals of this site is to promote HG. MOST views on this site are NOT from members but from visitors, they have no ignore button.

Having Tad run around every day giving the impression that there is a massive weekly slaughter of pilots at tow parks due to their horribly dangerous devices surely doesnt promote HG. Especially when the safety records are quite excellent.

Like Jim said, theyve gone a decade with no fatalities at their tow park. Pretty damn good I say.

Yet listening to Tad, you would think guys were dying all over the place
He's been nothing but misleading and negative and ignored multiple warnings from me. So He's GONE
Total fucking bullshit.

Tad was saying that the Flight Park Mafia was putting up 100.00 percent of its flights up on shit equipment in accordance with lunatic towing "theory", needlessly and deliberately endangering 100.00 percent of participants, crashing gliders left and right. And for the months of February and March of 2013 NOBODY was talking about all the flights at Quest that WEREN'T killing tandem aerotow instructors.

And now Jim's wonderful flight park is permanently/irreversibly...

Sunday is the day the we'll all miss without Highland; god I miss that place. Feeling nostalgic. I've flown out to Ridgley a number of times over the past year. They have a snazzy, beautiful, new, paved runway... but not much else going on. We had a good thing there for many years.
...extinct and Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney is permanently/irreversibly extinct for all intents and purposes.
So claims that President Trump will "melt the planet" are evidence of a biased and untrustworthy news source.
Yeah Bob. Opponents of President Trump are claiming that he'll turn the planet into a molten blob and expecting their marks to believe that and vote accordingly.

What they're actually claiming is that the climate is being rapidly and dramatically destabilized, ice caps are melting, glaciers are receding and disappearing, the Great Barrier Reef is turning into a biological desert, tropical storms are more powerful, islands are disappearing, Florida is starting to go underwater, mass extinction is ramping up. All this was predicted, is very clearly happening and documentable in no uncertain terms.
Brian Scharp - 2017/06/11 17:47:36 UTC

I'm for actively reducing the burning of fossil fuels and promoting solar and wind power.
I tend to agree with this position with the understanding that we are in a competitive world.
Yeah, let's see if we can win the race to the bottom.
Ronald Reagan was effective at de-escalating the cold war by ramping up our military might.
And greatly helped steady our path de-escalating lotsa other cold stuff.
That approach takes time. President Trump is still in the first half of the first year of his first term.
And we can hardly wait until his second, third, fourth terms.
Don't be too quick to rush to judgement.
I fuckin' despised Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney the first time I had an aviation related interaction with the motherfucker.
Trump is a world class negotiator.
For anything that Trump sees as benefiting Trump.
Give him some time to see the results.
Yeah, he'll probably keep doing the same things over and over and we'll get DIFFERENT results.
By the way, I find it interesting to note that the "Bob haters" began collecting signatures for my recall almost as soon as I was elected. Mark Forbes was more than happy to help them out. It took them over a year (of my 2 year term) to finally bring it to the ballot. It was another example of mass hysteria...
Bullshit. The Industry wanted you deactivated and marginalized and that's what it got.
...and USHPA ended up losing their insurance because there was no oversight at Torrey Pines (and elsewhere).
So if u$hPa had maintained oversight at Torrey Pines (and elsewhere) it WOULDN'T have lost its insurance? Bullshit. Commercial operations - particularly the tandem thrill ride industry - ARE u$hPa.
I lost the recall election in the spring of 2010, and Shannon's injuries happened in the summer of 2011. I had explicitly warned USHPA about a similar incident while I was Regional Director, but they ignored it. Their ultimate "solution" was to expel me for my testimony in that case rather than correct the problems. That's why the sport of hang gliding needs an alternative like the US Hawks.
Right. A dictatorship - seven years minus two months today - operating under THIS:

This is going to sound cold, but I believe people have a right to make their own choices. I don't want a "nanny state" where anyone is telling me what I can and can't do ... for my own good. The sport of hang gliding would surely not exist if that thinking were carried to its logical extreme. There's something bred into all living things that urges them toward taking some degree of risk in their lives. Those who want to forbid that risk are essentially snuffing out the human spirit itself. I can't support that. I do support information. I support good information. I support exposing bad information. But I don't support dictating what anyone can or can't do. The fundamental principle of economics (and evolution) is two words: "people choose".
guiding "principle". (Just not for Shannon Hamby and ACA.)
Despite the fact that we may not see eye-to-eye on a number of political issues, I very much appreciate your membership in the US Hawks and I hope we can work together to create a viable alternative to USHPA.
When does he get to cast a vote that can't be vetoed on the whim of Emperor Bob?

The insurance industry didn't tell u$hPa to go fuck itself any time near after or because of Shannon/ACA. This:

was OBVIOUSLY the catalyst / last straw - even if it didn't cost the insurance industry a red cent. And it was Team Kite Strings that did the massive months long investigation/exposé which clearly documented virtually everything that u$hPa didn't want anyone to know and see. And there was virtually nothing going on with that one that wasn't...

Wrong.

I testified in September of 2014. The case was settled for an undisclosed sum in early 2015. That's very near the time that USHPA became uninsurable.

It's likely that the Jean Lake incident and the Torrey settlement both contributed to USHPA's loss of insurance.

But the underlying cause was USHPA's systemic protection of commercial operations over safety. The blame (or credit) for USHPA's loss of insurance rests squarely on the corruption (and arrogance) of USHPA's leadership. Sorry to disappoint you.

Tad, used to post about as nice as anyone, and nicer than some. Remember?

Blowback... You put in a thousand plus hour$, tooling, te$ting and documenting safety issues for the masses and have it ignored and suppressed by people, for whatever reason, and you would get testy too.
You're fairly snarky as it is, and you haven't done the work...

And you may be correct about the footnote... but today's footnotes are now hyperlinks...

There is a good chance that from now on, for every incident and fatality caused by insufficient weaklinks or sub-standard release mechanisms, a hyperlink trail will lead back to Tadtriedtowarnyou.com ... where all the evidence can be found.

A further link could then go to a list of all the people and the role they played in the suppression of those safety issues...
Who would like to be on that list?
How many are already on it?
...is uninsurable - for fundamental reasons on which we're in agreement, Highland Aerosports and Mid Atlantic aerotowing is a fading memory, and Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney is an embarrassment to and liability for every motherfucker who ever gave the little shit the time of day.

New Rule: Oath of Fealty?

Bob, without looking up the actual quote, have you ever stated that it is ok to reference anything from Tad?
Am I incorrect in this assumption?
Were there any bad words or threats in those two posts, where Tad is asking you to respond to ongoing safety concerns in the way hang gliding is done? These are safety considerations that you have addressed in the past.
Do you feel that those questions are not worth discussing when it comes to safety and therefore, the future of hang gliding?

Let me know exactly when the rules you have established were changed.

The course you are now embarked will mark the beginning of the end of this little experiment.
Have you noticed the distraction this paranoiac witch hunt has caused in shutting down discussion in another thread about the promotion of hang gliding? If it were possible for you to understand my developing proposal, could give the US Hawks some much needed credibility.
But no. You won't have any of it.
You are the smartest guy here and you want no part in developing any plan that doesn't come from your own slide rule calculator.
Moving a computer scale line by two megapixels does not reverse the laws of physics.
That kind of manipulation is not going to carry the US Hawks over the finish line of your imagination.

The Hawks has no product. There is no there, there.
You are selling pie in the sky and there is no market for it.
I am here to help you and you won't let me.
You don't know what I have to offer the Hawks because you don't listen.
Turn me out for the fake reasons I've seen here and my new motivation will be quite different.
The wisdom of wisdom is that you learn from your mistakes.
A little humility goes a long way too.

Do you really want to make something of the Hawks or is this just a big popularity contest?
Valid hang gliding safety concerns should never be off the table of any organization that professes to be a hang gliding organization.
Wherever they come from.

You can make rules about how these are presented but the first entrenchment or retreat from these issues are when the organization begins to lose relevancy.

Right now you are calling all the shots. Continue the course you are going and the gloves will come off.
You are not the only one allowed that privilege.
You can choose to lose my contribution and have it turned against you.
This is not a threat, it is just nature.
I've been railroaded before and I don't like it.
You know that feeling right? It's what brought us all together.
Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.
Perpetually a dictatorship with no actual product.

That's the most important point.

I took a high school class called "First Americans". There were many factors that contributed to the native Americans losing their land, and among them was the bitter hatred between various tribes. It was easy for the Europeans to divide and defeat them.

The rotten people behind USHPA's monopoly take great delight in every shot fired at either KiteStrings or the US Hawks.

In 1992 I voted on my principles for Ross Perot. I had (wrongly) convinced myself that we should vote for our favored candidate regardless of their chances of winning. I essentially ended up voting against myself.

The reality of your attacks on the US Hawks is a further strengthening of USHPA's corrupt monopoly. You can try to convince yourself otherwise, but you'll be just as wrong as I was in 1992.

Jonathan Dyetch has become another mouthpiece for USHPA propaganda. They'd much rather blame a dead pilot for their uninsurability than blame an active money making operation like Torrey Pines. Harrison gets the blame (even though there was no lawsuit/payout) while it's business as usual for the Torrey conce$$ionaire.

Follow the money.

- it's no great secret what his last name is to anybody in the game anyway
Jonathan has become another mouthpiece for USHPA propaganda.
Maybe. But he's on here - with moderator privileges - 'cause he's done and continues to do some good stuff for the sport / Kite Strings mission.

1. Dead what?
2. No doubt whatsoever.
Harrison gets the blame (even though there was no lawsuit/payout)...
1. There was payout up until the point at which his driver hit the rewind button with the glider still connected and the towline snagged over its port wheel extension.

2. Who do you think OUGHTA get (the) blame for that one? Feel free to include the names of any total fucking douchebags on the Board prior to the beginning of the crumbling of the Ponzi scheme...

[TIL] About Tad Eareckson
Bob Kuczewski - 2013/03/10 18:20:34 UTC

I first learned about Tad Eareckson when I was Regional Director and the USHPA Board circulated a letter he had written (with intention to send?) to the FAA about some dangerous practices in hang gliding.

The Board's knee-jerk response was to try to take some kind of legal action to silence Tad. I indicated that I thought we shouldn't be sending our lawyers in as our first response, and that maybe we should have someone talk with him first. So Dennis Pagen volunteered, and I believe the matter was settled without any serious damage to the sport.
...who attempted to silence Tad in order to preserve all the dangerous practices in hang gliding and prevent any serious damage being done to the sport.

Davis Straub's "Oz Report" Conflict of Interest
Bob Kuczewski - 2011/02/12 06:56:36 UTC

Without naming names (I'm curious to see if they'll own up to it first), on May 10, 2009, one Director wrote:
We need to consider getting an injunction against this guy communicating with the FAA on this subject.
That same day, another Director responded:
I forwarded the letter to Tim Herr yesterday asking about this.
For those who don't know, Tim Herr is ... USHPA's lawyer!!

A third Director (who I'll call "Mr. X") chimed in that same day with this:
Mr. X wrote:
Perhaps a strongly worded letter from Tim will do the trick. We can't force Tad to work within the USHPA framework but we can make it unpleasant and expensive for him if he chooses to makes derogatory and false statements about USHPA to the FAA he can't back up.
(Ya think these other motherfuckers have had enough time to own up yet? Is there some reason you feel their identities still need protecting eight years down the road now?)

3. How unfair to saddle Kelly with so much of the blame. Maybe we could help get him a posthumous NAA Safety Award in recognition of all the eleven year old kids he DIDN'T slam into the Jean lakebed.
...while it's business as usual for the Torrey conce$$ionaire.
1. Shannon Hamby was badly injured and I'd guess suffered major permanent consequences and there was, no doubt, a big payout. But she was a rated pilot operating as Pilot In Command of her aircraft. And nobody had a gun to her head forcing her to navigate in the traffic that day.

2. Only one glider went down and the other guy didn't get scratched. This was eleven o'clock local news stuff.

3. It's possible this could've happened if they'd both been Fours. See 2016/01/28 - Ken Muscio / Stan Albright.

4. Kelly Harrison / Arys Moorhead was a perfect storm horror show that was a major (inter)national event. This was an eleven year old kid who got slaughtered in front of his family after getting to go up first with the "skydiving instructor" 'cause he was too little to qualify for the zip line ride the day before. Shannon barely registers on a scale like that - financial award or not.

5. And what was there to cover up on the Shannon?

6. I'll bet they're not radio controlling any more P1s through traffic over the LZ.
