This is my write-up of my hang gliding accident on 2010/05/09 at Quest Air in Groveland, Florida during an attempted foot landing which resulted in shattered arms, bilateral humerus fractures, and radial nerve trauma. I could not write this up before now as I am just getting enough motor control in my right hand to type very slowly.

Pro Tip: Always thank the tug pilot for intentionally releasing you, even if you feel you could have ridden it out. He should be given a vote of confidence that he made a good decision in the interest of your safety.

Analyzing my incident made me realize that had I released earlier I probably would have hit the ground at high speed at a steep angle. The result may have been similar to that of the pilot in Germany. However Neal kept me on line until I had enough ground clearance, and I believe he saved me from injury by doing so. I gave him a heart-felt thank you.

With each flight, demonstrates a method of establishing that the pilot is hooked in just prior to launch.

I can't think straight when I'm getting to launch. That's why I hook the harness in first, long before I'm ready to launch.

You've already got a Kotch release... why not just use it as intended?
I'm serious... someone obviously looked at everything and thought there was a reason.
I can't work out what it would be, but I'll put money that they had something in mind.

Either issue can be a big danger if you release inadvertently with high nose angle low to the ground.

Last year, at LMFP I saw an incident in aerotow that resulted in a very significant impact with the ground on the chest and face. Resulted in a jaw broken in several places and IIRC some tears in the shoulder.

Where I fly (LMFP) there are a number solo pilot accedents every year, mostly where pilots get off the cart too soon. These pilots usually wind up bending aluminum, and some break bones. On the other hand, the tandem program there seems to be pretty close to perfect, safety wise.
ZackPractices implemented in flight parks and competitions provide a good example of how aerotow clubs should operate.
