I do not believe anything else could have been done after launch to prevent the accident. Once the tow line was connected incorrectly his fate was sealed and any other pilot would have met the same fate.
The shit works. It works in reality and it works consistently.

Due to the rough conditions weak links were breaking just about every other tow and the two tugs worked hard to eventually get everyone off the ground successfully.
"The glider pitched up.
The glider stalled.
A standard 130 pound test weak link was being used.
The weak link broke.
So what?

For a couple of years I have flown with a doubled weaklink because, flying with a rigid wing glider, I have found that there is little reason to expect trouble on tow, except from a weaklink break.
