Samuel Clemens - 1887/12/05

When the doctrine of allegiance to party can utterly up-end a man's moral constitution and make a temporary fool of him besides, what excuse are you going to offer for preaching it, teaching it, extending it, perpetuating it? Shall you say, the best good of the country demands allegiance to party? Shall you also say it demands that a man kick his truth and his conscience into the gutter, and become a mouthing lunatic, besides?

The time for taking all measures for a ship's safety is while still able to do so. Nothing is more dangerous than for a seaman to be grudging in taking precautions lest they turn out to have been unnecessary. Safety at sea for a thousand years has depended on exactly the opposite philosophy.

- Admiral Chester A. Nimitz, USN, parts of confidential letter 14CL-45 9 (now declassified) to the Pacific Fleet, following typhoon damage to many ships, 13 February 1945.

I never pay attention to anything by "experts". I calculate everything myself.

An alternate wind signal

In my pee brain anyway, the manner in which I look at a wind sock also goes along with the signal shown!

There are neat limiters in some that automatically release during lockouts or hot climbs.

Once you have displayed consistent control of the glider, you will be towed high enough to release the line.

The two most important things to remember are these: Firstly, your number one priority is to fly the glider, so concentrate on nothing but controlling it! Be sure to never give up on trying to fix any course deviations that arise and always look where you want to go. Secondly, remember the word "ABORT". If at any time you feel like the launch just isn't going right, yell out loudly and clearly, "ABORT! ABORT! ABORT!" and the radio operator will signal the winch operator to cut tension immediately.

At this point, don't worry about your landings - just use the wheels.

Figure 8 turns are a much better choice. You keep runway in front of you.
