I strongly disagree with banning the one guy who has the most knowledge about safety issues involving what I believe is the most dangerous part of our sport. I hear someone dies every year from towing. I hope SG bites his tongue in the interest of public safety.

So, it seems clear that a "simple" permit MAY have been all that was necessary. But it is also quite or very likely that A LOT more requirements needed to be met. Could be that J K Harrison would not have been able to meet those requirements. Or maybe he would have been delayed in starting his tow for pay business 1, 2, 3 weeks or even a month or two.

Also, Billy, have you ever heard of the "Butterfly Effect"? If not you can look that up too. What it means, quickly, is that a small change in events can cause BIG differences somewhere else. Example - If J K Harrison had been delayed a month in getting his paperwork/insurance/licensing and meeting with the BLM outdoor planner taken care of (in a responsible manner) then an 11 year old boy - and Harrison himself - would very likely be alive today. And it could also be that nothing would have changed. We'll never know because we can't go back and "fix" the past.
Total fucking lunacy. If Michelle - Arys' mom - had gotten drunk enough at lunch to be attracting the attention of the cops on the drive down to Jean there's no fuckin' way her kid would've been scratched. POSSIBLY somebody else's kid but not bloody likely. It takes hundreds of thousands of cycles before things line up right enough for one of these to happen and if you could hop on the TARDIS and just jiggle preceding events a tiny bit you wouldn't have the requisite Perfect Storm.

Something went wrong with the driver and/or the immediate environment that caused him to believe that the glider was off tow and respond as he did. Advance or delay the start ten seconds and it probably wouldn't happen.

If Zack Marzec hadn't hit that monster thermal in a window that may have been less than ten seconds wide we'd still be listening to Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney telling all us muppets how well he had things sussed out and what clueless assholes we all are. But he hit it JUST RIGHT so no more imaginary clothes on that emperor.

But for every instance you jiggle things and prevent a double fatal statistically there will a corresponding instance in which your jiggling sets up a double fatal. And if you weren't stark raving mad that would be fuckin' obvious to you.

Take a look at my above post - it may make some things clearer to you. I'm not on any "high horse". I've been just where J K Harrison was, even if the situations were a bit different. I speak from experience - on the SAME level as Harrison was looking out from.

As to -

It was the first miss-step down a path that led to two people dieing. Should we turn a blind eye to that First mistake? Then maybe the second mistake, and maybe the 3rd . . . ? You should read my post above.

As to many if not most of your other comments - I AGREE. Many things combined to cause these two fatalities. The video taken during the flight would be a VERY important bit of information for learning what went wrong aerodynamically - or in relation to the tow mechanics, if they were at fault.
What do you think the "tow mechanics" were, Scott? It was reported across the board without contradiction that the glider wasn't RELEASED from the "tether" - and we have photographic PROOF:

A human factor may also be revealed in the video tape.

But that tape has been seen by the police and I'm sure by the USHPA "investigators" who've gotten involved. But I would bet $ a certain way regarding whether we will ever see that recording. No see, No Learn.
No need to see. We know the glider needed to be released and couldn't be. Industry Standard.
But as far as the USHPA legal team is concerned - No See, No Get Sued.

Hi folks,

I understand the interest in learning the cause of this, but could we please not speculate on the forum? We have a very experienced tow administrator (Mitch Shipley) headed to Las Vegas to do an accident investigation, and when we learn what really happened we'll convey that information to our members. He'll be working with two of the local instructors there to get to the truth.

Meanwhile, please refrain from offering speculation or opinion on what might have happened, what might have been theoretically done to prevent it and so on. Emotions are raw, people are hurting, and uninformed speculation doesn't help anybody. News reports are of little use since they're written by people who have no idea how our sport works or what is typical.

Yeah, Metro says that it was the "TETHER" between the glider and the truck pulling it that caused this crash. Family members who weren't there at the time of the crash say this part of the family loved adventure, and that was one of the reasons they were out at the dry lakebed today.

The FAA WAS notified of the crash and did help with the investigation but Metro says because the glider didn't have a tail number and there was a truck pulling it at the time Metro is going to handle the investigation.

really, really weird. usualy the realease systems used for hang gliding towing are fail safe and there are weak links that break in such situations. i would really like to know what caused this disaster..
Beats me, dude. Very very reliable industry standard release within easy reach, Infallible Weak Link for which we have an expectation of breaking as early as possible in lockout situations while being strong and reliable enough to avoid frequent breaks from turbulence... Total mystery what could've possibly gone wrong. Maybe the PIC experienced some kind of medical event - but that's just speculation. We'll probably never know what really happened on that tow. (Where's Donnell when we really need him?)

When Jim got me locked out to the right, I couldn't keep the pitch of the glider with one hand for more than a second (the pressure was a zillion pounds, more or less), but the F'ing release slid around when I tried to hit it. The barrel release wouldn't work because we had too much pressure on it.

Anyhow, the tandem can indeed perform big wingovers, as I demonstrated when I finally got separated from the tug.

Oh, I've heard the "everything we do is an experiment" line before.
The trouble is, it's not.

I've seen experimentation with towing gear more than anything else in HG.
I've not seen many go out and try to build their own sails for example. When someone does, they're very quickly "shown the light" by the community. Example... the guy that was building the PVC glider in California somewhere.
But for some reason, towing gear is exempt from this.

The difference is what we do has been done by thousands of people already. It's been tested... a lot.
What we do is free of the experimentation part.
It's still dangerous, but not at the level of building new gear is. Not even close.

That's what people fail to realize.
It's no small difference. It's a huge chasm.

Notice how I'm not saying to not do it.
Go forth and experiment. That's great... that's how we improve things.
I'm just warning you of that chasm.

A few years ago, I started refusing to tow people with home made gear.
I like the idea of improving gear, but the lack of appreciation for the world they were stepping into didn't sit with me.
For example... flying with the new gear in mid day conditions?
Are you kidding me????

Approach it for what it is... completely untested and very experimental gear which will likely fail in new and unforseen ways as it tries it's damndest to kill you... and then we can talk.
These flight parks aren't gonna let you risk your lives on completely untested and very experimental homemade gear which will likely fail in new and unforeseen ways as it tries it's damnedest to kill you.

What is the load to actuation ratio of this "used at all the flight parks" release, Davis?
HE JUST TOLD YOU - ASSHOLE. He's never had it not release and that's hundreds of times, it's used at all the flight parks, and simpler is safer. And, on top of that, Jeff told you not to worry about that and to check out the Ollie which works fantastic when you're not being towed - in accordance with Lockout Mountain Flight Park's standard for its state of the art aerotow release which isn't warranted as suitable for towing anything.

I dunno... Why did he reboot Bob and lock down the "Goodbye Bob K?" thread? I'm guessing to keep making sure the only progress this sport makes is backwards.
