Saturday May 7th
Matthew Graham - 2011/05/09 11:50:38 UTC

Saturday at Highland wasn't as stellar as Sunday. Very windy on the ground and tows were often nasty city. Still, we got up. I got about an hour and 5500 feet on my first flight and a half hour on my second flight after breaking my release (not my weak link-- my release!) at 1500 feet.
Must've been using...

Better mouse trap(release)?
Jim Rooney - 2010/12/16 18:47:05 UTC

A few years ago, I started refusing to tow people with home made gear.
I like the idea of improving gear, but the lack of appreciation for the world they were stepping into didn't sit with me.
For example... flying with the new gear in mid day conditions?
Are you kidding me????

Approach it for what it is... completely untested and very experimental gear which will likely fail in new and unforseen ways as it tries it's damndest to kill you... and then we can talk.
...homemade gear.

Who were you behind? Certainly not Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney. A few years ago he started refusing to tow people with homemade gear.

He likes the idea of improving gear, but the lack of appreciation for the world people who do so were stepping into didn't sit with him.

For example... flying with the new gear in mid day conditions? Are you kidding me????

Approach it for what it is... Completely untested and very experimental gear which will likely fail in new and unforeseen ways as it tries its damnedest to kill you... and then you can talk.

Or... Is there some small chance you were using Industry Standard gear?

Then...

barrels release without any tension except weight of rope..
Bart Weghorst - 2011/02/25 19:06:26 UTC

I've had it once where the pin had bent inside the barrel from excessive tow force. My weaklink was still intact. The tug pilot's weaklink broke so I had the rope. I had to use two hands to get the pin out of the barrel.

No stress because I was high.
No stress because you were high.

And, of course, it BROKE. And that just makes it one more layer of protection you have to increase the safety of the towing operation...

Weak link question
Jim Rooney - 2008/11/25 19:21:57 UTC

Brian,
While I appreciate your quest for the perfect weaklink, didn't we cover this already? (Again?)
Are we to go down the road of debating the quality standards of greenspot again?
Ok, for review, it doesn't matter.
Why?
Because you have nothing else.
Do I have to review why we don't tow handmade gliders?

Listen we're all perfectly aware that greenspot is not laser calibrated to 130lbs. It's bloody fishing line. Get over it. Are you flying below your perfect numbers as a heavy guy. Yes. Yes you are. Get over it.
Why?
Because it's all you've got.

Why lower numbers? Because your choice is lower or higher... and higher is more dangerous than lower.
It just became an even safer weak link than your single loop of 130 pound Greenspot.

And that was the end of the thread. ZERO interest in:
- what kind of release it was
- why it failed
- where it failed
- what's being done to fix or ground and replace the problem
from any of the CHGA douchebags or the Ridgely Monopoly shits.

And can you IMAGINE the international FIELD DAY that would've been had if that had been some completely untested and very experimental gear from T** at K*** S****** flying in midday conditions?
Harry Robb - 1975/09
Clearwater, Florida

No flight should ever be made with a knot in the tow line. Aside from the abrasion caused by the knot rubbing on itself, the tensile strength is decreased by as much as fifty percent. Lines require constant inspection - prior to the first flight of every day by every flyer. In a tournament, the Lineman Starter can inspect some portions of the line on each flight, and the Safety Inspector will inspect the entire line slowly, foot-by-foot, two or three times daily. The tow line is a life line and must be treated with utmost respect.

The tow line safety release mechanism, an essential item of safety equipment is a stainless steel hook, hinged to open and close with a spring-loaded base housing that is attached to the tow line. It is activated with a motorcycle type release handle mounted on the control bar conveniently near the normal position of the hands on the control bar for takeoff. A cable in a housing from the handle to the release mechanism activates the release of the hook holding the tow line. The safety release with the hook is mounted at the forward apex of a triangular stainless steel frame welded to the control bar. When a V safety bridle is used, a second release is mounted at the top of the control bar frame near the point of its attachment to the cross spar and keel spar.

The three most used brands - home made models are not recommended due to lack of knowledge about their strength factor - are on Bennett Delta Wing gliders, on Moyes gliders, and the more recently available Schweizer sailplane release used by David Broyles and by Jack Hinson of Dallas, Texas on their conversion control bars for hang gliders. The Schweizer is rated at 1200 pounds deformation strength, as stamped on the release hook.
Ain't it just great to see just how far the sport has advanced in four decades - largely thanks to Quest spending the last two perfecting it and Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney spending the last one keeping everybody in line?
And then a skydiver dive bombed me-- I kept turning to get away and the skydiver kept coming right at me. Ugh!

Carlos got up to 5600 feet. Joe Gregor, Karen, Steve Kinsey, Marcelo (?) and Paul also had good soaring flights. I think Paul flew seven times. Dave Proctor, Kirk Lewis and a few tandems also flew.
Fuck you, Matthew. And everybody else you mentioned 'cept for Steve. At least he actually did a couple things and tried for a while.

Just some stills from a couple of Niki Longshore's videos showing the motions/effort/time/compromises involved in blowing the new and improved Lockout Mountain Flight Park "aerotow release" (which they don't use themselves...

Hand comes off the basetube on both sequences to deliver the substantial jolt required.

That would be close to acceptable if it could be done with the five or six hundred pounds of towline tension we need to be able to handle - but no fuckin' way should anyone ever allow that piece of shit be velcroed onto a glider.

And/But compare/contrast with the bullshit she's gotta go through to blow off with the Wallaby "Release":

The pieces of shit who produce this crap, sell it, put it on gliders - their own as well as other people's, allow it to be hooked up to towlines all deserve to be lethally injected by the Oklahoma Department of corrections. Paul and Lauren might be good places to start. That way Bobby, Davis, Adam, Rooney, Bo, Brad, Bart, Matt, Trisa could see what was in store for them.

The rest of the separation aftermath...

Seeing as how this video is dead (and has been for a very long time) I tacked on another 25 stills just illustrating the bridle falling away from the tow ring and going into streaming mode.

The stills illustrating the approach and landing for this flight are from another (and better (this one's digitally lightened (washed out color-wise))) posted video:

What can be learned from this "scooter" towing accident?
Jim Rooney - 2011/02/06 18:35:13 UTC

I don't really have anything against the Kotch release.
I think it's big, clunky and expensive, but I'm sure it works fine.
I'm also sure it has it's problems just like any other system. The minute someone starts telling me about their "perfect"system, I start walking away.
One of the classics:

Hangglider winchTowing / towing line wraped over link
elaeroplano - 2010/04/26

during preparing to an winch towing hanggliding flight the towing line wrapped over the towing link .
a very dangerous happening.
to all hanggliderpilots !
check the towingline at your link before launching !!
Schleppseil verhangt sich and der Schleppklinke (Tow rope gets caught at the tow release - German)
that Jim Keen-Intellect Rooney really gets his rocks off on and uses to justify his miserable existence. If once every thirty years somebody screws up a setup and/or preflight, figures out a way to accidentally or deliberately sabotage something, or is stupid enough to use tried and true Industry Standard shit with long track records he gets validated and everybody on the planet needs to use Rooney Links because WHEN the failure manifests itself it will inevitable be in the course of a low level lockout and the Rooney Link will almost certainly meet our expectation of breaking as early as possible in the lockout situation.

Of course we also have gliders with unpreflighted sidewires, missing basetube pins, and defective carbon cross spars but it's OK if we go up minus ballistic parachutes.

So let's take a look...

- walkthrough
- lift and tug - properly (if possible)
- dolly - most properly

Probably won't be making that mistake a second time, in any case.

So let's pick up the glider...

Very very reliable bent pin release. Very rare failure. Nuthin' wrong with it, huge track record. All mechanical things fail once in a while. Don't put any tension on it and you'll be fine. This is why we fly with weak links and hook knives and make sure we only have problems above two thousand feet in smooth air.

P.S. Anybody know what's up with the tribble on his chest?

Over-Under Tow Release
Michael Farren - 2014/08/20 04:11:07 UTC

A few of the new style aero tow and ground tow releases are using the a curved stainless steal parachute pack locking pin. Any advantage over a straight steal pin for the release?
- You don't hafta steal it.

Tad's Barrel Release and maybe an alternative
Jim Rooney - 2008/02/13 09:06:35 UTC

Oh..... in failing to answer my "what advantage does a straight pin have" question... you attempt to reverse it to "what advantage does a curved pin have".

Well, two things....
One... no one's trying to improve on your design. The bar was set with the Bailey... it is to YOU to "improve", which you have not done.

Two... The advantage of a curved pin... it can handle differing thicknesses of materials. Yours can't. You have a very narrow range and then you run into the problem of that pesky stop. That's why yours have weaklinks on both ends... nice and thin.
http://ozreport.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=24846
Is this a joke ?
Jim Rooney - 2011/08/26 17:34:33 UTC

My point is that everything has issues. Everything. Period.
Will I fly with a straight pin release? Sure.
Does it have the track record of the curved pins? No.
Does it have limitations that the curved pins don't? Yes, yes it does.
Do they matter? Depends on your situation.
Try fitting a straight pin release with anything but weaklink. (it doesn't quite fit the same) OH! Right. Just might be that we've thought of that eh?
- It has a much longer track record.

- It's easier to close over a thick rope without using a weak link and...

Pro towing: 1 barrel release + weak link or 2 barrel release
Juan Saa - 2012/10/18 01:19:49 UTC
Boca Raton

The normal braking force in pounds for a weak link is around 180, at least that is the regular weak link line used at most aerotow operations. By adding a second weak link to your bridal you are cutting the load on each link by half, meaning that the weak link will not break at the intended 180 pounds but it will need about 360.
If that is what you use and is what your instructor approved then I have no business on interfering, i dont know if you are using the same weak link material but there shoul be only ONE weak link on a tow bridle for it to be effective in breaking before higher loads are put into you and the glider should the glider gets to an attitude or off track so much that the safety fuse of the link is needed to break you free from the tug.

I made the same mistake on putting two weak links thinking that I was adding protection to my setup and I was corrected by two instructors on separate occacions at Quest Air and at the Florida RIdge.
...if you put weak links on BOTH ends of a thick rope you double the tension required to get blown off tow. And, of course, the tug's weak link will also double its strength when it detects paired weak links on the back end.

barrels release without any tension except weight of rope..

- They're reasonably easy to pull apart on the ground using two hands after they've welded themselves shut in flight.

That enough for ya?

Man, I know there are some links in a thread SOMEWHERE to find these kinds of releases, but danged if I can find it.

I saw an over-designed version on a YouTube video - Jeez, it had to be German. Beautiful, full of all kinds of machined parts, anodized aluminum and polished stainless steel pins.
All that complexity just guarantees failures left and right.
It would make one ashamed to drop it in the dirt at your local tow road. Probably costs as much as a little Beemer, too.

Who's making releases now?
Who cares? Just use one of these very very reliable bent pit barrel releases:

Tad, the standard configuration here is a loop of 205 leech line tied with a fisherman's knot and attached to the end of the release with a lark's head (with the knot at the attachment point).

The weak link loop is pulled through a loop at the end of the tow line and attached back at the release, creating four strands total.

One of our members tested various weak link configurations years ago and reported: "I posted a spread sheet in 2004 on this site (still there) which shows the results of tension testing the standard weak link material (205 leech line).

The break strength depends on age, type of knot used, cross sectional diameter of link and of course number of strands. In general the 3 strand link was good from 260 to 370 lbs, a 4 strand link broke above 600 lbs." I don't see the file anymore however.

I've not tested breaking strengths myself. Weak link breaks are very rare for us and generally only happen at the end of tows (when tension is higher). I don't think I've had a weak link break since I started flying with a radio and requesting pressure reduction when I felt tension rise.

Just wanted to put this one up 'cause it's rare evidence of intelligent life coming out of hang gliding. Well designed (Mason) release mechanism, clever weak link configuration - incorporated as an element of the release where it takes the wear and tear and is replaced virtually effortlessly, refreshingly robust.

Criticisms... Materials should be low stretch (dacron versus nylon/perlon) and lanyard is within easy reach.
